Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Dental technician who exceeded his brief struck off by General Dental Council

A dental technician has been struck off by the General Dental Council (GDC) after he carried out work on patients he was unqualified for.

Manchester Evening News reports that Anthony Warren Cann carried out work beyond his brief at a clinic which repairs false teeth in Trafford, Greater Manchester.

Cann took impressions from patients' mouths and fitted dentures.

He also failed to tell patients he treated at A&B Cann Dentures Direct, on Northenden Road in Sale, Greater Manchester that they needed a prescription and should be seen by a qualified dentist.

The hearing had learned that Cann had also failed to disclose to the GDC a conviction for unlawfully practising dentistry when he completed an official form for the GDC in March 2008. Cann had been convicted at Trafford Magistrates Court in October 2006.

Cann had been summoned to appear before a misconduct panel, but had not attended the hearing. In his absence, the Committee said in its ruling:

“The Committee considers that Mr Cann’s actions have been unacceptable –
and have brought the profession into disrepute.

“The Committee considers that there is a real risk of patient harm, if a dental technician provides treatment for a patient instead of the patient being treated by a dentist. One of the risks is that there will be no diagnosis of disease or oral infection.

“Another is that there is a risk of poor impressions being taken and the dentures causing consequent damage to the patient’s mouth.

“The Committee also took into account the chronology of Mr Cann’s repeated dishonesty – and that he acted outside of his scope of practice, both in 2005 and 2014.

“He has failed to demonstrate any insight into why dental professionals must not act dishonestly and must at all times stay within their scope of practice.”

Cann was immediately suspended and his name will be struck off the dental register within a month unless he lodges an appeal against the GDC’s ruling.

The practice Cann worked for declined to comment on the case when contacted by the Manchester Evening News.
