Sussex Police have confirmed that a worker employed on the fire-damaged pier at Eastbourne was killed when he fell from the structure at around 4pm on Monday (19/08/14).
The Kent, Sussex and Surrey Air Ambulance was called and landed on the beach next to the pier, but a 44-year-old man from Cumbria was declared dead at scene, police said.
An investigation into the man’s death will be launched by Sussex Police and the Health and Safety Executive.
The 144-year-old pier was badly damaged in a fire on 30 July, but no one was injured in the incident. Chancellor George Osborne has pledged £2 million to rebuild the fire-damaged pier.
The contractor who died on Monday has not yet been named but his next of kin have been informed, Sussex Police confirmed.
