A cosmetic surgeon is warning that some cosmetic fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments can cause serious injuries to patients, including blindness, nerve damage and tissue necrosis.

London-based cosmetic surgeon Dr Julian De Silva says he has heard of three patients treated with dermal fillers to smooth out wrinkles who lost their sight completely – while another 30 patients experienced some loss in their vision.

Dr De Silva also claims that dermal fillers – which are injected into the skin to smooth out wrinkles and plump up cheeks to create a more youthful appearance – can also cause strokes.

The Daily Mail reports that because fillers are categorised as implants rather than drugs, regulation on their use is relaxed and fillers can be provided by untrained staff.

Dr De Silva warns, however, that an unnatural or disappointing result from using fillers is a minor concern compared with the health risks involved – including the dangers of fillers injected into an artery by mistake by a beautician who is not medically trained.

“This can lead to necrosis – or death of the skin tissue – and if they’re the arteries that supply oxygen to the back of the eye, this can lead to loss of vision,” he said.

“In a worst-case scenario, fillers can even block oxygen supply to the brain, resulting in a stroke,” warned Dr De Silva.

He added that to date there are four known cases of stroke as a result of patients having their own fat injected as a cosmetic filler.

Dr De Silva said that cosmetic treatment patients should know before the procedure exactly what would injected into their face and what the side effects could be.

“I suggest using only hyaluronic acid-based fillers as these can be broken down if the patient has a reaction to them – and only having fillers that have been approved in the US, because they have a good safety record,” he advised.

“And make sure you’re in the hands of a qualified medical professional, with knowledge of the anatomy of the face,” he added.
