Concern over cancer risk as women use their abdominal fat for cosmetic breast surgery (21 January 2015)

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (Baaps) has expressed concern over “fat transfer” cosmetic surgery, in which fat from the abdominal region is used in breast augmentation cosmetic surgery.

The London Evening Standard newspaper reports that Professor Kefah Mokbel – lead surgeon at the London Breast Institute – has in the last week treated three women who wanted to lose fat from their abdomen and enhance their breast measurement.

Live cells taken from another part of the body and implanted in the breasts may interfere with breast tissue, says Baaps – although this theory is not supported by clinical studies.

Prof Mokbel says that abdominal fat is easily available – and is rich in stem cells, which helps increase blood supply to the breasts to help support the fat which has been transferred.

The surgeon uses a technique known as body-jet – similar to a liposuction technique – which injects water into the abdominal area to make harvesting fat cells easier by separating them. An incision in the abdomen is then made to remove the fat cells and transfer them to the breasts to cover the implants used – and prevent rippling to create a more natural appearance.

Prof Mokbel said that fat-to-breast transfer may improve the body’s contours – but he would not recommend it as a weight-loss technique.
