Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Carlisle businesswoman devises road safety programme for schools after son is knocked from bicycle

A Carlisle businesswoman whose young son was involved in a local road traffic accident has spearheaded a new approach to child pedestrian safety, which is being trialled in the Carlisle area.

Sarah Watt – who owns the local franchise for the educational and play-based Pyjama Drama – said her son Hughie was knocked down while he was on his bike in 2014.

He suffered cuts and bruises but was not badly injured. However, his mother has devised a drama session lasting 50 minutes, to be used within a school timetable to teach children about road safety.

Local businesses are also being asked if they want to get involved in the road safety project, involving the use of drama to make road safety learning both memorable and fun for six- and seven- year-olds.

The drama session lasting 50 minutes features key road safety messages and the trial has been funded by Cumbria County Council – partly through the Carlisle Local Committee – as part of the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership.

Miss Watt said:

“My little boy, Hughie, was knocked down while he was on his bike last year. Hughie suffered cuts and bruises, but was not seriously hurt.

“One minute he was on the road – the next minute he was on the bonnet of the car. Don’t ask me how.

“It was very scary and it really worried me that many children may not know about how they should act on the road, as either cyclists or pedestrians.

“I felt that I should do something – and by working with the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership, I now can.”

The Partnership is also asking local businesses to sponsor the drama sessions, to allow all children attending to receive a high-visibility safety item.

Chris Broadbent of the Cumbria Road Safety Partnership said:

“We very much appreciate the good work being carried out by Sarah to help keep our youngsters safe.

“This trial – which will end in March next year – will hopefully lead to this approach being adopted across Cumbria in the future.

“We would like to ensure that all of those who attend the sessions are given a high-visibility item as a souvenir for use in the dark winter months, so we would welcome any offers of sponsorship from local businesses to help achieve this.”

Miss Watt added:

“I’m hoping that this new approach – which has been well received by the schools – will appeal to any local businesses who want to support it in any way.”
