Butler-Sloss steps down from public inquiry into child sex abuse (15 July 2014)

Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Butler-Sloss steps down from public inquiry into child sex abuse

The inquiry into how public organisations handled child sex abuse allegations has been thrown into chaos by the resignation of the former judge appointed to chair the inquiry, Lady Butler-Sloss.

The leading judge faced a barrage of criticism for her appointment, with victims of child sex abuse and campaigners claiming that she was “too near” the establishment, some of whom may be implicated in historic child sex abuse allegations.

Lady Butler-Sloss’ late brother, Lord Havers, was the Attorney General in the 1980s – he has been implicated in preventing the naming of a diplomat in the House of Commons, who was a known paedophile.

Lady Butler-Sloss has a successful track record as a judge presiding over child abuse inquiries, but according to a report in the Evening Standard newspaper, she had been criticised regarding allegations that during a review of child abuse in the Church of England, she refused to include details of how the church handled allegations against two priests who were paedophiles, claiming that she “cared about the Church” and that the media “would love a bishop”.

Home Secretary Theresa May has defended her appointment of Lady Butler-Sloss, reiterating that she feels she is the right person to chair the inquiry.

However, the former judge’s family connection to the attorney general in the 1980s – and allegations that she did not include full details of the Church of England review into paedophile priests – resulted in mounting pressure for her to stand down from the inquiry.

The Prime Minister’s office has said the decision by Lady Butler-Sloss to stand down from chairing the inquiry was entirely her own
