A seven-month-old baby has suffered an eye injury after the pram he was in allegedly collapsed around him – and part of it struck him in the eye.

The Daily Mail reports that baby Preston Harris was taken by ambulance to Leeds Infirmary and has been left with a black eye.

His mother 17-year-old Chereace Dyer says her son was with his aunt when the incident happened. She said her sister Caseylee Dyer, 21, described how the £85 pram Preston was travelling in folded up around him, trapping him beneath it on the pavement.

“He's been badly injured,” Miss Dyer said. “It looks like the side of the pram hit him. I can't believe it happened.

“When I saw him, I was so upset – it's awful seeing your little boy so injured.

“But he is a gorgeous boy and still smiling. He's been really brave despite being in a lot of pain.”

Ms Dyer and Preston’s father Luke Harris, 19, were at home when her sister banged on her door.

Ms Dyer said Preston had been staying with her sister for the night and she was taking the baby home to his parents.

“She took him down two flights of stairs very carefully,” said Ms Dyer. “She said she felt the pram was weakening as they reached the last floor.

“When they were on the ground floor – which is concrete – suddenly the pram collapsed.

“She said it somehow hit him in the face – it trapped him and she couldn't get it off him for a while.”

As her sister did not have a mobile phone on her, she gathered up Preston in her arms and took a bus to his parents’ house.

“My heart was in my mouth when I saw my son,” said Ms Dyer. “He looked a total mess. He was wailing and crying. His eye had swollen up like a golf ball.”

The couple phoned for an ambulance, which arrived quickly and took Preston to hospital.

Doctors gave the baby painkillers and examined his eye. Ms Dyer and Mr Harris have been told there will be no lasting damage to Preston’s eye.

The pram’s manufacturer Mamas and Papas said will be speaking to Ms Dyer about what happened.

A spokesman said:

“We are investigating the incident as a matter of priority – and have asked the customer to allow us to collect the product so we can carry out a full inspection.

“The Swirl pushchair has been on sale for almost two years. This is the first time we have received a complaint or a report that it has been involved in an incident.

“The safety of our products – and of the children who use them – is our paramount concern. All our products comply with all relevant safety standards.”

Ms Dyer has posted an image of her son’s injuries online to warn other parents.

“I need other parents to be aware of what could happen,” Ms Dyer said.

“I would hate for any other baby to be injured like my son.”

She said that since posting the details of the incident online, she has been contacted by other parents who have had similar experiences with prams collapsing.

Ms Dyer added that she had contacted solicitors over the incident.
