Asthma UK calls for GPs to monitor patient prescriptions more closely (16 June 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Asthma UK calls for GPs to monitor patient prescriptions more closely

An audit of 100,000 patient records by the charity Asthma UK has revealed that some asthma patients are not receiving the appropriate medication to keep their condition safely under control – and many had been prescribed the wrong inhalers.

BBC News reports that, among NHS patients whose asthma care had not been monitored closely enough, some doctors had failed to notice when a patient’s condition was “spiralling dangerously out of control”.

A particularly severe attack of asthma can lead to death in some patients.

Asthma UK says that its audit shows that no patient is in immediate danger, but is warning patients to check the inhaler they have been prescribed and how often they use them – asthma patients should receive a preventer inhaler if they are prescribed a long-acting reliever inhaler, for example.

The charity also says that asthma patients who use 12 or more short-acting reliever inhalers a year need to see a GP – long-term, regular use of short-acting reliever inhalers suggests their condition is not under control and other medication is required.

Asthma UK investigated more than 500 GP practices between 2010 and 2013 and found that 5,000 patients had been prescribed more than 12 reliever inhalers over a 12-month period – with 1,965 patients not having their condition reviewed by a nurse or doctor during that period.
