Duncan Lewis, Personal Injury Solicitors, Andrew Marr calls for more NHS rehabilitation therapies after stroke

BBC journalist and writer Andrew Marr has called for the NHS to provide more rehabilitation services for victims of stroke.

Mr Marr was speaking on ITV’s Jonathan Ross programme on Saturday (15/02/14) and spoke candidly of how he had been affected by stroke.

Mr Marr said that he ruptured an artery while exercising on a rowing machine – and was aware at the time he had done something “stupid” in pushing himself physically to achieve a particular goal in his exercise programme.

However, it was not until he was found collapsed in his bedroom the following morning that his family realised he had had a stroke.

Mr Marr said he was lucky because the left-hand side of his brain rather than the right-hand side had been affected – leaving him with serious disabilities on the left-hand side of his body, which he is working to overcome and is optimistic about.

However, had the right-hand side of his brain been affected, it is likely he would have lost his memory and speech to some extent – making returning to journalism difficult, if not impossible, he said.

Mr Marr also spoke about how he witnessed other stroke victims struggling to cope with their disabilities because they were unable to afford rehabilitation therapies, as he was.

He added that many stroke victims – including young adults – are forced to accept life in a wheelchair simply because they cannot afford essential rehabilitation after brain injury or stroke.

Mr Marr said that charities such as ARNI (Institute for Stroke Rehabilitation) are working to help provide stroke patients with the rehabilitation they need – but the government needs to do more to make sure patients with brain injury receive the rehabilitation they need to allow them to regain as much of their cognitive and physical skills as possible and return to work.
