A year after the Jay Report into sexual abuse in Rotherham, it is reported that just a few survivors of the abuse have sought help in dealing with the effects of the abuse.

The Guardian reports that out of 1,400 child sex abuse victims in Rotherham, only around 100 girls have come forward to help with new inquiries into the abuse – and a fraction have sought help in the last 16 years, according to a lawyer representing 58 survivors of the abuse.

The findings of an inquiry into the Rotherham child sex abuse scandal were published last August in Professor Alexis Jay’s report, which gave details of the child sex exploitation occurring in Rotherham between 1996 and 2013.

Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police were severely criticised for not taking action to prevent vulnerable young girls – many in local authority care – from being trafficked and sexually exploited by local men, many of whom were of British-Pakistani origin. It is reported that, at the time abuse and trafficking were taking place, the authorities were concerned addressing the problem might destabilise community relations.

The councillor in charge of Rotherham’s children’s services between 2005 and 2010 and South Yorkshire PCC, Shaun Wright, resigned in the wake of the Jay Report.

South Yorkshire’s current PCC, Dr Alan Billings, replaced Wright.

Dr Billings said:

“I still don’t fully understand how the police could turn away from young girls who were being exploited; but whatever the answers, they do not excuse people – who should have recognised a crime – from failing to act.”
