To mark International Women’s Day this year we are highlighting some of the many incredible women’s charities we encounter in the course of our work at Duncan Lewis Solicitors.
There are too many charities providing lifeline services around the country to mention but some of our team have nominated a few they think deserve a special mention.
Family and child care director Ravi Kaur Mahey is a charity trustee for Not Beyond Redemption, a charity supporting women in prison.
The charity recognises that imprisoning women who are better suited to community service or rehabilitation programmes, has a devastating impact on family life and creates longer term issues for society.
More than 17,000 mothers are separated from their children by imprisonment each year. Members of the team attend court for women who are in or have left prison and assist in re-establishing and regenerating the fundamental relationship between mother and child.
Ravi said: “Not Beyond Redemption’s does fantastic work. Female prisoners are more likely than male prisoners to report poor mental health and problems with alcohol and drugs. Self-harm for women is also far more prevalent. In breaking the bias – there could be much more done to work with women offenders as the current system is not effective and has repercussions for wider society, their children and families. I urge everybody to check out their website and support them in any they can, even by sharing our post and raising the charity’s profile.”
The theme for this year’s IWD is “Break the Bias” which makes it difficult for women to move ahead and urges supporters to cross their arms to show solidarity and post a picture online.
