It is our pleasure to announce that litigation director Anthony Okumah has won the 2020 International Advisory Expert (IAE) Award for Civil Litigation – United Kingdom. Now in its fourth year of publications, International Advisory Experts is a global alliance of well-established and experienced legal, financial, tax, and consulting firms. Each year the International Advisory Experts’ group pay tribute to firms who have been successful over the past 12 months and have received exceptional praise from their peers.
Based in our Harrow office, litigation director Anthony has over 13 years’ experience as a solicitor in litigation matters and specialises in dispute resolution, arbitration, mediation and litigation. He currently leads a team of three and has excellent links with leading barristers and local/foreign experts.
Anthony has a particular interest in professional negligence claims against solicitors, barristers and accountants; insolvency matters such as bankruptcy and winding up proceedings/applications to set aside transactions at an undervalue, as well as property litigation and trust claims involving determination of beneficial ownership, and finally, contested probate claims and boundary disputes.
Over the years Anthony has developed a niche expertise in complex and/or high-value claims for clients including companies and individuals, foreign clients with claims abroad, high net-worth individuals, Hollywood A-listers, prominent Islamic clerics, vulnerable individuals, and charities. His current expansion concentrates on high-value multi-jurisdictional contractual and financial disputes.
Anthony has established a growing reputation for obtaining effective settlements and resolutions, allowing clients to recover damages early and mitigate their losses whilst continuing daily life with little disruption. Furthermore, he was also a recommended lawyer in the 2020 edition of The Legal 500 for Insurance: Professional Negligence – South East.
In a recent commercial litigation case valued at over £1 million, Anthony leads the team representing in a case that has spanned various tribunals and courts in the country and Anthony’s team currently represents the client in the High Court whilst also exploring a civil restraint order against the defendant. The case has also been widely mentioned in the legal press.
Anthony is also part of the firm-wide team representing some of the core participants in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry in a separate matter. Anthony’s representations in this case highlight his ability to confront a high-value, particularly complex and technical case that is also of an extremely sensitive nature, requiring him to take into account the clients’ vulnerability and suffering.
Cuts to legal aid have made it increasingly difficult to access legal advice that is financially viable, Anthony aims to alleviate this and takes part in a pro bono surgery at Citizens Advice: Hillingdon every fortnight where he offers free litigation advice by telephone. This partnership ensures that vulnerable clients not only receive the legal assistance they require, but do so in a safe space.
On learning of his award, Anthony said the following:
“I am humbled to have been selected as the Civil Litigation – United Kingdom 2020 winner by the IAE. Receiving this award was a complete surprise to me and I’m honoured that my work has been recognised by a global alliance of leading professionals. It is a privilege to share this award with my team and I look forward to continuing to tackle litigation/dispute resolution head on and provide the most effective solutions and outcomes for my clients.”
We are exceptionally proud of Anthony’s achievement and offer him congratulations for receiving this award.
