Duncan Lewis, Main Solicitors, Javeria Ijaz shortlisted at the British Muslim Awards 2020

It is our pleasure to announce that supervising immigration solicitor Javeria Ijaz has been shortlisted for the Rising Star in Law award at the 2020 British Muslim Awards.

Now in its 8th year, the British Muslim Awards honours the success and achievements of Britain’s Muslim individuals, groups, and businesses across a range of fields including business, charity, sport, arts, and culture. Finalists are selected on the basis of nominations received from the public.

Based in our Birmingham office, Javeria has over ten years PQE and as in-depth experience as an advocate, regularly representing clients in immigration, nationality, asylum, and human rights cases at the First-tier and Upper Tribunal as well as challenging applications and appeals at the Court of Appeal and handling judicial review matters.

She is a Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) Level 2 Caseworker and office of the Immigration Services Commissioner (OISC) Level 3 Senior Caseworker under the Law Society’s Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme, testament to her expertise in immigration law and enabling her to work for both private and publicly funded clients.

Her judicial review matters focus on Rule 34 and 35 matters, certification under s94 and s96 of the Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, and a large number of challenges to age assessments as a result of the substantial work she does assisting minors.

Recently, she was part of the Birmingham team that challenged the Home Office at the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The case involved challenging the refusal of a fresh claim and seeking urgent interim relief by way of an injunction prevent in the client’s removal from the UK. The client had been successfully granted the injunction but permission to bring the judicial review was refused and the claim was certified to be ‘totally without merit’. The Court of Appeal refused permission to appeal further and so Javeria and the team made a Rule 39 application to the ECtHR which resulted in a positive outcome with the court preventing the removal of the client. The case is particularly notable as it was only the third Rule 39 application to be accepted by the ECtHR.

Javeria has a particular expertise in assisting vulnerable, marginalised, and often ostracised individuals including asylum seekers, victims of domestic violence, trafficking victims, and unaccompanied asylum seeking children. Notably, she and her team were involved in a high-profile case representing a young Afghan child who was one of 15 people to be pulled from a sealed container on the M1 as oxygen became perilously low. They were travelling from a migrant camp in Calais and were saved when the client’s seven year old brother sent a text to charity workers in France telling them that they were running out of air. Javeria and her team helped secure status for the client.

Javeria was a finalist for the Services to Law award at the 2018 edition of the British Muslim Awards, and has previously been shortlisted for the Rising Star in Law award at the English Asian Business Awards in 2018.

On learning of her shortlisting Javeria said;

“I am humbled to have been shortlisted into the finals at The 8th British Muslim Awards 2020. I am proud to have witnessed many changes in the legal profession over the last 10 years and look forward to continuing towards helping the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of our society in accessing legal advice and representation.”

The 2020 British Muslim Awards will take place on the 31st January 2020 in Manchester.

We are incredibly proud of Javeria’s achievement and offer her huge congratulations and wish her the best of luck on the night of the awards.
