Duncan Lewis is delighted to announce the return of family and Private Law Children solicitor Kohitoor Alam, who originally joined the firm in 2002 as a caseworker.
Extensively experienced in all areas of private and publicly funded (legal aid) family and private law children matters, Kohitoor decided to spread her wings elsewhere in 2018.
She is now working as part of director Laila Bhunnoo's London-based Legal 500 ranked team family and child care team and is looking forward to helping them achieve even greater levels of success.
Kohitoor has spent more than 12 years with Duncan Lewis over two separate occasions.
She said: “Duncan Lewis was always special to me because that is where I completed my training in 2005. I always enjoyed the culture and the opportunities for learning and progression, and I’m delighted to be working in Laila’s highly skilled team and looking forward to using and expanding my existing experience.”
Kohitoor completed her legal training with Duncan Lewis and was admitted as a solicitor in 2005. She briefly left the firm for the first time in 2007 before returning in 2008 and remained with us until 2018. She has been a member of the Family Law Panel since 2012.
She is frequently called upon to advise and represent people in divorce cases, where great sensitivity is required, and specialises in financial issues arising from the breakdown of a marriage; this includes making applications for Freezing orders and orders to set aside transactions and in financial remedies following cohabitee disputes.
In private law children act matters, Kohitoor advises and represents parents in applications for child arrangement, specific issue, and prohibited steps orders, as well as in domestic violence work.
Duncan Lewis’ large family team is ranked and recommended by the Legal 500 guide for their work across London and the South-East, and handles all aspects of family law with particular specialism in representing victims of domestic violence, unusual divorces and securing financial settlements following the breakdown of a marriage. The guide recognises the team is skilled in handling the complexities of parental conflict especially parental alienation cases and also has extensive experience in Islamic law and a particular specialism in advising on female genital mutilation protection orders and its formidable reputation for its experience in international and domestic family law proceedings at the high court. Its dedication to ‘outstanding client care’, and ‘compassionate and understanding’ lawyers are also highlighted.
Duncan Lewis holds accreditation in Investors in People Gold Standard, and has a formidable reputation in respect of enabling staff progression. There has been a large number of internal promotions across the year, including 10 to director (partner-Level) this year alone. Highly placed in The Lawyer’s 2021 top 200 law firms' guide, the publication also recently ranked Duncan Lewis as the best firm for diversity and gender, topping the table for most female lawyers at a law firm of those companies listed.
