Duncan Lewis Solicitors is pleased to announce the appointment of Nusrat Chowdhury as Director within the Actions Against Public Authorities department. Nusrat’s work will focus on pursuing claims against public bodies such as the police, prison services, and local authorities—particularly in cases involving serious misconduct or breach of duty.
Working alongside Graeme Rothwell to co-direct the department, Nusrat brings both a deep commitment to justice and a wealth of experience to the role. Since qualifying as a solicitor in 2023, she has earned a strong reputation for representing clients in a wide range of civil matters, with extensive experience handling complex and high-value claims, including those arising from serious injuries caused by police action. Her work also encompasses claims involving false imprisonment, negligence and discrimination. She is also police station accredited and has provided dedicated support to clients facing a variety of offences, with a special focus on working with young people and individuals with mental health needs.
Nusrat said “I am thrilled to take on the role of co-director of the Action Against Public Authorities team at Duncan Lewis. This position will allow me to lead with purpose, fight for justice, and create meaningful change by holding influential institutions accountable.”
Before joining Duncan Lewis, Nusrat held a solicitor role at Kesar & Co Solicitors, where she managed a busy civil caseload, specialising in human rights and judicial review. She also played a key role in firm-wide compliance, ensuring adherence to Solicitor Regulation Authority standards.
Nusrat’s dedication to social justice extends far beyond her legal work. A former Anti-Bullying Ambassador in relation to the Diana Awards, an accolade for young people who have demonstrated social action or humanitarian work, established in memory of the Princess of Wales. Nusrat was recognised for creating an impactful educational campaign that gained widespread attention. Her advocacy inspired the launch of her own “Friendly Face” initiative, a peer support scheme aimed at tackling bullying in schools across Croydon. Nusrat is also multilingual, fluent in all Bengali dialects, Hindi, and Urdu – a strength that enhances her ability to serve diverse communities with sensitivity and understanding.
“We are thrilled to welcome Nusrat Chowdhury as Director of our Action Against Public Authorities team. Nusrat’s dedication to upholding the rights of some of the most vulnerable members of our society, alongside her proven legal expertise and commitment to social justice, makes her an invaluable addition to our leadership team.”
Our Action Against Public Authorities department encompasses a broad practice, representing both privately and publicly funded clients in nationwide matters involving civil complaints and claims against public agents such as the police, prisons immigration detention centres. The team’s recent caseload includes the ongoing representation of a 90-year-old woman with Dementia in gross police misconduct proceedings, and the successful representation of a father and his autistic son following their assault by a police officer. We look forward to the valuable contributions Nusrat will bring to our expanding Action Against Public Authorities department.
