We are pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted for the Large Law Firm of the Year award at the Leicestershire Law Society Awards 2020.
The Leicestershire Law Society (LLS) is a society that aims to promote and highlight Leicester as a centre of legal excellence in itself. It is made up of approximately 700 members who are practising solicitors in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland as well as a rapidly growing number of associate members from sets of Barristers’ Chambers.
The Large Law Firm of the Year award rewards firms operating within Leicestershire that have demonstrated extensive development, progress, initiative and innovation within the last year. It also takes into account the firm’s involvement with external legal and business organisations, both locally and nationally, amongst other things such as client care, CSR and pro-bono work, commitment to staff development, overcoming challenges, and contributing to the legal field in the wider sense.
Our Leicester office is home to our public law, immigration, family, child care, and housing teams and is the base for our partner level directors; Ahmed Aydeed, Alexis Masolo, Alison Winfield, Krina Parmar and newly appointed director Olamide Olayemi. The work carried out from our Leicester office in the last year has been exceptional and has helped cement our status as a prominent law firm in Leicestershire and the East Midlands
Notably, Duncan Lewis is home to one of the largest immigration teams in the UK, with a significant practice in Leicester, making us a prominent legal firm in the East Midlands for the provision of publically funded immigration legal services. In a move to further improve our presence and excellent reputation in and around Leicester, solicitor Alexis Masolo was promoted to director in 2019 and now oversees the Leicester immigration department alongside public law director Ahmed Aydeed.
The team handles a wide range of immigration, asylum, and human rights matters, with a particular skill in cases involving; age assessments of asylum-seekers and/or migrants; victims of trafficking and modern slavery; challenges to deportations or removals and matters pertaining to the EEA Regulations.
Moreover, our Leicester-based immigration team also has a niche expertise in assisting unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) and has considerable experience representing vulnerable minors. We have a substantial referral base throughout the Midlands, with expertise in challenging UK Border Agency decisions on age assessment to the Higher Courts. We also regularly assist detainees at IRC Morton Hall, with Alexis Masolo recently representing a Nigerian national in challenging the failure of the Ministry of Justice to process his Subject Access Request.
The housing department handles a range of social housing matters, assisting both landlords and tenants in cases that involve homelessness; possession proceedings, matters involving rent arrears and anti-social behaviour; injunctions under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014; breach/committal proceedings; unlawful eviction; and cases involving disrepair.
The office’s family and child care teams represent both privately and legal aid funded clients in a variety of matters, notably divorce cases, financial disputes, private children matters, and care proceedings.
When it comes to pro bono, our Leicester office has an established and regular pro bono asylum and immigration surgery in association with Red Cross Leicester. The teams also work with the Women’s Aid charity and Panahghar in Coventry to support victims of domestic abuse in the area. Recently, director Ahmed Aydeed led his team in a legal surgery for members of the Sudanese community by collaborating with Waging Peace, an NGO that campaigns against genocide and systematic human rights violations in Sudan. The various departments at Leicester also take part in housing, litigation, family, and childcare surgeries across London and the Midlands. Overall, we participate in over 70 different pro bono schemes across all our offices, ensuring that vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals receive high-quality legal advice and assistance and a gateway to justice.
We are thrilled to be shortlisted for the Large Law Firm of the Year award. The Leicestershire Law Society Annual Dinner and Legal Awards will be held on Friday 20th March.
Huge congratulations to everyone who has contributed to our continued success and recognition in the last twelve months, and in particular to everybody in the Leicester office for demonstrating our excellence and the quality of our services.
