Our Wills and Probate department contributed to the £9,692,797 raised by participants of Free Wills Month in March 2020. These funds were raised in spite of the disruption caused by the pandemic halfway through the month. Trainee solicitor Zeen Al Atroshi drafted the majority of the free wills handled by the department with legal consultant Simi Gupta also assisting.

Collectively, the department, led by director Caroline Roche, raised approximately £12,550 in future donations for the Free Wills Month charities which include The British Heart Foundation, Mind, NSPCC, Marie Curie, Stroke Association, The Salvation Army, Guide Dogs, Age UK, Blue Cross for Pets, RNLI Lifeboats, Versus Arthritis, and The Royal British Legion.

The Free Wills Month scheme allows members of the public aged 55 and over to have their simple wills written or updated free of charge by a participating solicitor during the designated month. Whilst the service is free of charge, users are encouraged to leave a gift in their will to one of the associated charities.

Approximately half of UK adults have not prepared a will, risking their estate being left to someone they did not want to inherit it. Having an up-to-date will written by a solicitor is essential and ensures that an individual’s wishes are respected, and that difficult decisions and legal complications for their loved ones are avoided after they have gone.

Free Wills Month takes place in March each year and we look forward to participating once more in March 2021.
