Legal 500 “Top Tier” firm Duncan Lewis Solicitors are extremely pleased to announce that Family & Child Care Director Emine Mehmet was awarded the Family Law Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year award at the recent 6th annual Family Law Awards.
The 6th Annual Family Law Awards took place at The Bloomsbury Big Top in London on the evening of 23rd November 2016. The Pro Bono Award was the first award of the evening, presented by the Chief Executive of Law Works (National Pro Bono Centre), Martin Barnes. The shortlist and winners were chosen by a judging panel made up of the heads of the Association of Lawyers for Children, Chartered Institute of Legal Executives, Family Law Bar Association and Resolution, along with Family Law editors and publishing executives. The Family Law Awards were launched by Jordan Publishing to recognise the important work of family lawyers, and celebrate their many successes and outstanding achievements.
Winner of this year’s award Emine Mehmet is Director of Childcare at Duncan Lewis Solicitors. Emine has extensive experience in all aspects of childcare and family law, but specialises in international children public law & cross border matters. She is a member of the Law Society Child Law Panel and has a significant cross border practice in Hague Convention proceedings (child abduction), inherent jurisdiction disputes and international relocation cases.
Emine is Chairwoman of the Duncan Lewis Pro Bono Committee that delivers weekly Pro Bono advice sessions across a number of offices throughout the UK. Following recent Legal Aid changes, Emine works with organisations such as Hestia and Shelter and has developed a successful strategy for helping vulnerable individuals who would be otherwise unable to access legal services. She devotes her time to delivering free talks, monthly advice surgeries, attending fundraising events. Emine arranges community work to support those suffering from domestic abuse and also provides sessions to advise vulnerable victims on legal aid funding eligibility. Emine has a particular interest in helping women and members of ethnic minority communities, many of whom cannot speak English.
Emine has commented on her win saying that she is " honoured to be recognised for helping to ensure access to justice through my Pro Bono work."
