We recently sat down with Lucy Ghaidan, a passionate and driven Caseworker in our Court of Protection team, to learn more about her role at Duncan Lewis Solicitors. Since joining our City of London office in August 2024, Lucy has made impressive progress in her legal career—and in this interview, she gives us a behind-the-scenes look at a typical day in her life.
Watch our YouTube video for an inside look at the impactful work she does every day.
The Court of Protection is responsible for making decisions on behalf of vulnerable adults who lack the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves—particularly around their welfare, healthcare, or living arrangements.
“I assist with Court of Protection matters, usually involving Section 21A and Section 16 applications so a vulnerable adult will be assessed as lacking capacity, and that’s where we come in—to make sure that their voices are being heard.”
Lucy's role is as varied as it is rewarding.
“Day to day I do everything ranging from attending hearings, sitting in on conferences with counsel, drafting court documents and visiting clients in care homes. The majority of cases that I work on are publicly funded. This gives me an opportunity to provide assistance to vulnerable adults who might not otherwise be able to access legal representation.”
Lucy’s work has a direct, visible impact on the lives of those she represents:
“It is a really rewarding area of law to work in. I can always witness the positive impact that my work is heaving on vulnerable adults who are deprived of their liberty.”
With her LPC already completed, Lucy is now working towards starting her training contract with Duncan Lewis.
“The firm have been really supportive in assisting with this. I’m really excited to continue working with the Court of Protection team. It can be challenging, but it’s great to go home every day knowing that I’ve helped someone who’s truly needed it.”
Lucy’s rapid development at Duncan Lewis highlights the level of exposure and responsibility our caseworkers gain early on:
“It’s been less than a year since I started at Duncan Lewis and I feel like I’ve already gained so much experience in some really complex cases. I feel like I’m learning so much so quickly.”
