Date: 11/01/2022
Duncan Lewis, Main Solicitors, Congratulations to Newly Promoted Immigration Director Claire Ryan

We are delighted to announce that Claire Ryan has stepped up to the role of Director of Immigration at Duncan Lewis Solicitors.

Claire has a vast range of experience in immigration and public law and swathes of satisfied clients, many of who come from the most vulnerable and under-represented sections of society.

She will be based at our City of London office, where she will continue supporting clients from across England and Wales.

Claire said: “I’m passionate about fighting on behalf of the most vulnerable in our society and I frequently challenge decisions of the Secretary of State for the Home Department, in particular around unlawful detention, certification of asylum claims and negative trafficking decisions. I regularly represent people in detention and have successfully secured release for many clients, as well as significant damages awards in detention claims.

“I also frequently challenge local authority's age assessment decisions and sensitively support children throughout the process. I’m delighted to have become a Director and look forward to continuing to fight for my clients’ human rights.”

Admitted as a solicitor in 2015 – after joining Duncan Lewis in 2012 - Claire has built a diverse caseload, garnering significant experience representing unaccompanied children seeking asylum, victims of torture, domestic violence and trafficking.

She frequently conducts advocacy and represents clients in the First-tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal of the Immigration Asylum Chamber.

Claire’s dedication to her craft is demonstrated further in that, while working hard for Duncan Lewis, she continued her studies, completing a Masters in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration.

Claire is accredited as a Supervisor and Level 2 Senior Caseworker under the Law Society’s Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme and her recent notable cases include:

  • LC, R (On the Application Of) v The Secretary of State for the Home Department [2018] EWHC 1925 (Admin) - Solicitor with conduct - The case concerned the detention and deportation of an EEA national. The High Court held the Claimant had been unlawfully detained since April 2018.

  • FS v London Borough of Croydon [2019] - Challenge to a Local Authority age assessment of an unaccompanied asylum seeking child. The Upper Tribunal found the Applicant was his claimed age.
