We are delighted to reveal that our public law director Ahmed Aydeed has been Highly Commended for the Human Rights Lawyer of the Year award at the 2020 Law Society Excellence Awards. The Law Society Excellence Awards recognise the industry-wide work carried out by law firms in England and Wales and are one of the most prestigious awards ceremonies in the legal profession.
The Human Rights Lawyer of the Year award celebrates excellence and outstanding achievement in human rights, and rewards solicitors whose determination and dedication have made exception contributions to the promotion, protection and advancement of human rights whether through long-term activity or from a single outstanding case.
In the last year Ahmed has received significant praise for the work he has carried out in combatting modern slavery and human trafficking which has resulted in positive implications for both his own clients and others who have been subjected to slavery. His focus is not only on the prevention of modern slavery and trafficking, but also on creating a more positive future for those who have been subjected to such practices.
He has been at the forefront in the battle against criminalisation, detention of victims of modern slavery and human trafficking. He has led key public law challenges including his recent challenge to the Home Office’s policy terminating all statutory support to slavery victims in the UK after just 45 days. The Home Office conceded that their policy was indeed unlawful. Thanks to the challenge, victims will now receive support that is provided in relation to their individual needs rather than for a single stipulated time.
Huge congratulations to Ahmed who thoroughly deserves to be recognised for the continued commitment he has displayed.
Our success continued with the firm winning the Large Law Firm of the Year Award in recognition of our commitment to access to justice, dedication to nurturing talent, promotion of diversity and inclusion and working tirelessly against all costs.
We are extremely proud to have been recognised at this year’s Excellence Awards and once again offer our congratulations to Ahmed as well as all of the other winners and nominees.
