Shropshire Council has announced that mental health academics from Australia, Wales and England will join with lecturers from the University Centre Shrewsbury (UCS) for the launch their new book, which provides an introduction to mental health at each stage of life.

Mental Health Across the Lifespan has been written by Professors Mary Steen and Nicholas Procter from the University of South Australia – with colleagues
from the University of Chester (UoC) and UCS, including Prof Ben Green.

Other contributors include UCS Residential Tutor and UoC PhD Candidate, Scott Steen, and Prof Andrew Lovell and Richard Mottershead from UoC, as well as Alison Owen-Traynor from Bangor University in Wales.

The book is intended to be an easily accessible introduction to mental health – and topics covered include historical, social and cultural issues and mental health promotion – as well as mental health during pregnancy and early parenthood, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and in older people.

The book not only seeks to engage professionals working within mental health care – but is also intended as a useful reference for doctors, nurses, midwives, health visitors, allied health professionals and health and social care support workers who have no specialist mental health training, but who often work in partnership with and care for people suffering from mental health issues.

Scott Steen said:

“Mental well-being is an integral part of being, and feeling healthy. It is estimated that one in four people will suffer from some form of mental illness during their lifetime. In spite of this, it is often overlooked in mainstream healthcare.

“The overall aim of this book is to provide knowledge and understanding of how mental health affects individuals, from conception through to the end of our lives – and the challenges that society as a whole has to address in the treatment of poor mental health.”

The book launch is on Tuesday, 8 March at Guildhall in Frankwell Quay from 5.30pm to 8.30pm – reservations can be made at communications@ucshrewsbury.ac.uk.
