The NSPCC has responded to the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement, saying that the government “has again missed the opportunity” to show it is making progress on a country that works for vulnerable children and the mental health crisis they face.

The charity said that more must be done to ensure that children can get the help they so desperately need – and through the charity’s “It’s Time” campaign, it is calling on the government to provide improved mental health support for children who have experienced abuse.

The charity said it had welcomed the £1.4 billion funding that the government had previously pledged for mental health services. However, a recent report finds that this money is failing to reach frontline services – and nearly one-quarter of children are being turned away.

The charity says that it is clear that more is now needed to tackle the problem.

“It is disappointing that the government has not protected funding and given these vital services greater priority,“ said the NSPCC in a statement.

“We know that early intervention is vital when children are facing mental health issues – too often, help only comes when a child is already self-harming or is on the brink of suicide.

“We have seen a surge in calls to Childline about mental health issues in the past year, with children struggling to get access to services – and we also know that nine in ten children who suffered abuse at an early age will go on to develop mental health issues by the time they are 18.”
