The London Assembly Health Committee is holding a meeting on Tuesday 29 November, to discuss suicide in London – including how suicide prevention work is co-ordinated and whether or not London should aspire to be a “zero suicide city”, like Detroit in the US.
Work to prevent suicide in the capital is mainly carried out by local councils –
but the London Assembly says that some local authorities in London do not have a suicide prevention plan in place.
Nearly every inner London borough has a higher suicide rate than the London average – Haringey has the highest suicide rate at 11.1 per 100,000 of the population.
Overall, London’s suicide rate is below the average rate for England – but there are significant variations across London, in particular between inner and outer London.
The meeting will discuss whether the capital should have a pan-London approach to prevent suicide in the capital – and if so, the role of the London Mayor in the plan, if any.
The meeting will take place at 10am in The Chamber at City Hall and can be viewed via webcast.
