UK border to shift further into Calais by summer (9 February 2015)

Date: 09/02/2015
Duncan Lewis, Immigration Solicitors, UK border to shift further into Calais by summer

The UK Border Force agency is to relocate the UK’s border controls at the Port of Calais, to try and prevent lengthening queues on the approach road where immigrants try and board the lorries to reach England.

The border point is expected to move further into the Port of Calais by the summer – and four additional lanes will be added to accommodate peak-hour traffic.

Migrants frequently target lorries bound for the UK to try and enter Britain. There have been several deaths among desperate migrants trying to reach England by climbing onto lorries boarding ferries for UK ports.

Currently hundreds of migrants from across the world are living in appalling conditions in the open air or in improvised camps at the Port of Calais.

The French authorities have announced a new camp for migrants will be opening on the outskirts of Calais, which will be run by the French charity La Vie Active. The camp will offer meals to migrants, as well as washing facilities.

The escalating war in Syria and other flashpoints have resulted in more migrants trying to reach Europe – although the UK remains only fifth on the list of preferred countries for migrants to claim asylum in. Germany and France are the top two European countries for migrants and asylum seekers to settle in.

Home Secretary Theresa May had said that a reduced search and rescue in the Mediterranean would help reduce the number of illegal immigrants trying to reach Europe at the hands of people traffickers.

However, so far in 2015, the Italian and Greek authorities have been called upon to mount large-scale rescue operations, when large cargo vessels carrying hundreds of migrants have foundered en route to Europe, after traffickers have abandoned them near Italy’s coastline, leaving them to drift ashore.
