Backbencher Mark Field – MP for the Cities of London and Westminster – has told the Prime Minister to stop trying to “out-UKIP UKIP”.
The Guardian reports that Mr Field is calling for the Prime Minister to scrap the immigration cap. He was speaking at the launch of a moderate Tory immigration group which he has set up, called Conservatives for Managed Migration and said that an immigration cap in Britain would threaten the country’s future as a trading nation.
Mr Field said that moderate members of the Conservative Party and business leaders feared that capping immigration would damage Britain’s economic growth. He added that in this current parliament the Conservative Party’s target on cutting net migration would not be met.
As the May European Elections and 2015 General Election approach, immigration has become a major focus for all three main political parties and UKIP.
In response to fears over the number of new migrants who would come to the UK after border restrictions were lifted on Bulgaria and Romania from 1 January, David Cameron introduced measures to limit immediate access to welfare benefits for new migrants – as well as limiting to six months claims from migrants for out-of-work benefits, unless they have a genuine chance of gaining employment in the UK.
Figures released by the Office for National Statistics in February show that, last year, net migration stood at 212,000 compared with 154,000 in 2012.
Mr Field said that the UK needed “calm debate” about immigration.
“We are not going to be able to out-UKIP UKIP … We are a global trading nation and we need to encourage the fittest, the brightest and the best,” he said.
