As many as 4,000 European migrants unable to find employment in the UK could face losing their Jobseeker’s Allowance under new plans being considered by the government.
The Daily Mail reports that the measures would be introduced alongside recent proposals unveiled by David Cameron to restrict access to out-of-work benefits to EU migrants until they have lived in the UK for four years.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said the Prime Minister’s proposals to restrict welfare benefits to EU migrants need to be discussed “in detail” – but Mrs Merkel did not dismiss the proposals out-of-hand. Mrs Merkel said she as pleased that David Cameron had not tried to renegotiate freedom of movement in the EU, which underpins the principles of the European Union.
The Polish government has indicated, however, that Poland may veto any attempts by the UK government to limit access to benefits for EU migrants – many welfare claimants in the UK are from Poland, including migrants who come to the UK to work and are able to send child benefits back to their family in Poland.
