The Director of Border Force Sir Charles Montgomery has told a committee of MPs that the number of people trying to enter the UK illegally via Calais and other Channel ports has nearly doubled in the last year.

The Guardian reports that in the ten months up to January 2015, a total of 31,180 detections involving people trying to enter Britain illegally had been made.

In the same period for 2013-2014, the figure was 18,000 detections. It is not known whether improved detection of illegal migrants trying to reach the UK from Calais is the reason for the rise – or whether more migrants camping at Calais has caused the increase.

Sir Charles estimates that there are around 3,000 migrants currently waiting in Calais, “determined” to reach the UK by climbing into or under lorries crossing the Channel.

Exit checks on certain categories of traveller will be introduced from 8 April, to provide more information on passenger movements. There will be certain exemptions from exit checks, including coaches carrying children under the age of 16 on school trips.

The UK has also signed up to access a pool of European data on criminals who may try and enter the UK – the SIS II register also lists missing people, including children.
