Lord Dubs meets Dubs 67 child at the Houses of Parliament (24 March 2017)

Date: 24/03/2017
Duncan Lewis, Immigration Solicitors, Lord Dubs meets Dubs 67 child at the Houses of Parliament

On 15th March, seven refugee children were invited to Parliament by Citizens UK, where they met their local MPs and Lord Dubs, the man who sponsored a crucial amendment to the Immigration Act 2016 that allowed for the safe passage of unaccompanied refugee children to the UK at a time when the European migrant crisis was at its peak.

While six of the invited children came to the UK from the Calais jungle under the Dublin III regulations, one child was given entry to the UK thanks to the Dubs amendment. IH, a boy represented by the Immigration Team at Duncan Lewis Solicitors, is that Dubs 67 child, who was able to enter Britain thanks to the work of Lord Dubs ensuring a legal route to safety for these highly vulnerable unaccompanied minors fleeing conflict in the Middle East. It was therefore particularly memorable that IH and Lord Dubs met on what was no doubt a special occasion for both parties.

Lord Alfred Dubs is known as a Labour politician and former Member of Parliament. However, he is also famously known as one of the 669 Czech children saved from the Nazis in WWII who eventually sought refuge in the UK. In 2016, his Dubs 67 Amendment was rejected by the House of Commons, but was eventually passed by the Government following strong support in the House of Lords.

While our client now resides safely in the UK thanks to the Dubs Amendment and the work of our lawyers in identifying him and advocating for his safe transfer to the UK, the Government ended the programme in February of this year, having accepted 350 unaccompanied children into the country. Lord Dubs has since voiced his dismay with the Government, arguing that they “have gone back on their word” and fallen well short of the commitment to take 3,000 unaccompanied refugee children from Europe. Campaigners, politicians and even senior figures in the Church of England all joined together in criticising the Government’s “deeply disappointing” decision to end the Dubs 67 programme.
