The director of a Leicester-based clothing company has been disqualified as a director for six years, after an investigation by the Insolvency Service and the Home Office found that workers not eligible to work in the UK had been employed at the company during her period of directorship.

SN Clothing Ltd went into liquidation in February 2014 owing £119,026 to creditors.

In June 2013, six employees at the company were found to be working illegally manufacturing women’s and children’s fashion clothing.

Investigators also found that Sameena Bi Shaikh, 34, from Leicester had been a director of SN Clothing Ltd between April 2012 and February 2014. All six employees had been working at the company while Mrs Shaikh had been a director.

The company was fined £25,000 – and from 3 September 2015, Mrs Shaikh was banned from working as a director, or managing or in any way controlling, a limited company until 2021.

Chief Investigator of Insolvent Investigations, Midlands & West at the Insolvency Service, Sue MacLeod, said:

“Illegal workers are not protected under employment law – and as well as cheating legitimate job seekers out of employment opportunities, these employers defraud the taxpayer and undercut honest competitors.

“This should serve as a warning to other directors who may feel tempted to break the law.”
