Jail for unqualified immigration adviser (26 July 2016)

Southwark Crown Court has sentenced a woman found guilty of offering unregulated immigration advice to three jail terms, to be served concurrently.
On 27 June 2016, Sirine Parween, 41 – of S.P Law Associates Ltd in Barking, east London – pleaded guilty at Southwark Crown Court to three charges of providing unregulated immigration advice or services, committed since April 2015. A further four offences were ordered to be left on file.
On Monday, 25 July, she was sentenced by Judge Beddoe at Southwark Crown Court to eight months’ imprisonment for each offence, to be served concurrently.
Judge Beddoe described her actions as incompetent – and said that she had put her interests “above anyone else’s”.
The court heard that Parween was not qualified – and whatever qualifications she held in her home country, she was not qualified here in the UK.
Judge Beddoe found that she had committed the offences on a commercial basis.
After sentencing, Deputy Immigration Services Commissioner, Dr Ian Leigh, said:
“The OISC is here to ensure that people seeking immigration advice are treated fairly by people they can trust to be fit and competent – Ms Sirine Parween chose to operate outside the law.
“I hope this sends a clear message to other people considering providing immigration advice – act within the law or you will find yourself in court”.
