A Sri Lankan national was caught attempting to get married to an EU citizen when immigration officers swooped in on the sham ceremony in Harrow, London.
Had the ceremony have progressed, under European law the 23-year-old man would have been considered an EU citizen.
The raid by the Home Office immigration enforcement team occurred at Harrow Registry Office at 2PM on the 29th October.
Acting on intelligence, the officers stopped the wedding and detained the bride and groom.
Upon questioning it was discovered that groom was found to have overstayed his visa.
The 21-year-old bride was also questioned by officers and released; the groom was placed on Immigration bail while further enquiries take place.
If he is discovered to have no genuine reason to remain in the UK, he faces deportation.
