Immigration Office refuses kidney donor entry to the UK (1 July 2014)

The brother of a seriously ill kidney patient has been prevented from entering the UK to donate one of his kidneys to his brother.

Musa Gibba, 34, from Hampshire needs a life saving kidney transplant, after developing kidney failure following his move to the UK from The Gambia in 2007.

Local publisher The Daily Echo reports that his brother Malick offered to donate one of his kidneys – but has received a letter from the UK Immigration Office refusing him entry to Britain.

Musa has been working in Britain as a mechanic and was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2009. He is receiving treatment at the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, where he undergoes three sessions of dialysis lasting four hours every week.

Doctors have put Mr Gibba on a waiting list for a kidney transplant – but hopes that his younger brother would be allowed to enter the UK from West Africa to donate a kidney have been dashed.

Malick Gibba was found to be a match for his brother in May 2013, but the kidney transplant could not be carried out in The Gambia and so he applied for temporary leave to enter the UK.

He has asked for permission to remain in the UK for six months to allow time for ongoing medical tests and any further treatment required.

The Immigration Office has claimed that there is not enough evidence to suggest that Malick would stay for just six months, however.

His brother Musa is not able to work because of his illness and has been unemployed since 2010.

He has separated from his wife, who cares for their four year-old-daughter.

Portsmouth Hospital NHS Trust has supported Malick’s application to enter the UK and remain for six months for the purposes of the kidney transplant and follow-up treatment. Malick now says he will appeal the decision of the UK Immigration Office.

Musa Gibba told publisher The Daily Echo:

“It’s heartbreaking – all I want is for brother to come over and save my life.

“After three years on the waiting list getting nowhere, I was so excited and grateful to find a donor. Now day by day I am getting worse and running out of time.

“I have worked in this country and paid taxes and contributed to the country. But there are other people who don’t contribute and they can get help.”
