The Home Office has announced the appointment of a Second Permanent Secretary who will have responsibility for immigration and free movement policy – as well as oversight of the borders, immigration and citizenship system.

Oliver Robbins was previously Director General for Civil Service Reform at the Cabinet Office – part of his new role at the Home Office will involve the resettlement of refugees from Syria in the UK.

His appointment was approved by David Cameron in consultation with Home Secretary Theresa May

The Home Secretary said:

“I am delighted to welcome Oliver Robbins to the Home Office as Second Permanent Secretary. Olly’s wealth of experience of working in high profile, challenging roles across government will be invaluable.”

The Permanent Secretary Mark Sedwill said:

“I’m looking forward to working with Olly as we deliver the Department’s priorities to secure the UK border, control immigration and welcome the Syrian refugees we are resettling in the UK.”

David Cameron has said that the UK will take 20,000 refugees from refugee camps along Syria’s border – and will be accepting mainly children, including disabled and orphaned children. They refugees will arrive over a four-year period to 2020.

Mr Robbins said:

“I’m delighted to be joining the Home Office and to be working on some of the government’s top priorities.

“I look forward to joining the team driving the response to borders and immigration challenges within the Home Office and across government.”
