The EU has given France £3.6 million to build a new camp to improve conditions for around 1,500 of the estimated 5,000 migrants living at Calais who are hoping to cross the Channel and enter the UK illegally.
The Evening Standard reports that the money will be used to improve conditions at the notorious “Jungle” camp, where thousands of migrants are camped out in squalid conditions.
The funding was announced by European Commission vice president, Frans Timmermans, during a visit to Calais.
Greece has become the new point of entry to Europe for migrants making the hazardous journey across the Mediterranean Sea – and many are camped out in the open on Greek islands ,awaiting papers that would enable them to travel to the Greek capital Athens and then onwards to wealthier northern European countries such as Germany, France and the UK.
In a joint statement with her counterparts in Paris and Berlin, Home Secretary Theresa May Home Secretary has suggested reception centres are needed at key arrival points in the EU – with a list of “safe” countries to speed up asylum decisions.
EU ministers will meet on 14 September to discuss the escalating crisis in migration to EU member states.
