Family lose appeal to remain in UK, after injury makes them miss visa deadline (1 December 2014)

An Australian family currently living in Warwickshire are facing deportation after illness caused them to miss the deadline for renewing their visas.
BBC News reports that the Puchys family of Harborough Magna in Warwickshire are trying to persuade the Home Office to allow them to remain in the UK. Mr Puchys was unable to renew the family’s visa because he sustained a broken knee while in Brisbane and was told he could not fly back to the UK.
The family appealed on the grounds of exceptional circumstances but their appeal was rejected and they were told they had to leave the UK by 6 December.
Mr and Mrs Puchys run a business in Warwickshire and have a renewable visa. The family has lived in Britain for the last six years and they have a 12-year-old son.
The Home Office said that every case was considered on its individual merits “and in line with immigration rules”.
Mr Puchys said:
“Ultimately we met and still do meet all the requirements of the visa, except for the date that we lodged the application – and that was caused by circumstances which were completely beyond my control.”
