The Prime Minister has told the annual Conservative Party Conference that if the party wins the 2015 General Election, the UK’s relationship with the EU will be renegotiated – including limits on the number of EU migrants allowed to come to the UK to live and work.

The Telegraph reports that David Cameron told the party conference that reducing the number of EU migrants coming to Britain was at the heart of his Brussels renegotiation strategy. The Prime Minister added that the current level of EU migration was “too much for our communities, for our labour markets”.

The pledge by the Secretary of State for Justice Chris Grayling that the UK would also withdraw from the Human Rights Act also formed part of the Prime Minister’s address to Tory party delegates.

Mr Grayling has previously said that the UK would withdraw from Strasbourg and reinstate the Supreme Court as the highest court in the UK.

Currently, appeals can be made at the Strasbourg Court under the European Convention on Human Rights.

This has made the job of deporting certain asylum seekers and convicted criminals back to their home countries difficult for Home Secretary Theresa May.

Other EU countries are also reported to have concerns about high levels of immigration from both refugees and asylum seekers from outside the EU who are fleeing war zones – as well as citizens from EU member states moving across borders to find work, study or improve their lives in countries such as Germany and France.
