Duncan Lewis, Immigration Solicitors, Busting the Myth: International Students are £2.3 billion Benefit to the UK

Immigration is a matter always at the forefront of British politics, and through no fault of their own international students are being absorbed into the discourse because of their inclusion in the net migration target stats; so often quoted by politicians. As a result of this, the topic of international students can often be seen as being on the receiving end of the anti-immigration rhetoric.

While it can be said that politicians recognise the importance of international students in the UK, there has been a considerable debate over the economic value.

In a study undertaken by PWC, the benefits of student immigration was brought to light.

The research highlighted many examples of hard data that demonstrates the benefits that student immigration has upon the UK economy, such as;

• International students in London bring a net benefit of £2.3 billion to the UK economy.
• International students support nearly 70,000 jobs in London because of the money they spend whilst here.
• International students are not a “burden to our public services”, such as the NHS. They contribute a total of £2.8 billion through the spending they bring to the country, while only consuming £540 million in public spending.
• 60 per cent of international students including alumni said they are far more likely to conduct business affairs with the UK as a result of studying here.
• London’s Higher Education system is an export success story, with 92 per cent of students saying that they would recommend studying in the UK to their friends and family, even despite more than a third finding that Britain’s immigration system negatively affected their experience of studying.

However:

• More than a third of students found that Britain’s immigration system, particularly its complexity, negatively affected their experience of studying here.
• A vast majority of students also commented that the system made it very difficult to secure work in the UK after they had completed their studies.
