An analysis of Home Office Data undertaken by the Guardian has revealed that 57% of all asylum seekers housed by the government are housed in the poorest third of Britain.
Meanwhile, the richest third of the country houses only 10% of all asylum seekers. Poorer local communities are put under a great deal of pressure as a result.
Labour MP Yvette Cooper has criticised this system, commenting “It’s just not fair to do it that way. It’s not good for community cohesion, it’s not good for local authorities…it also creates a sense of resentment.”
Stuart McDonald, SNP spokesman for immigration, asylum and border control, has highlighted the problems that arise with concentration of asylum seekers in certain areas. Local authorities are forced to spend a considerable amount on education and other services for asylum seekers, whilst the other, often wealthier authorities do not. More local authorities volunteering to house asylum seekers is needed to solve this issue of asylum seekers being settled primarily in poorer areas.
A spokesperson from the Home Office commented “We have worked hard to encourage more local authorities to participate in accommodating asylum seekers and ensure this duty is shared across the UK.”
