In a statement to the House of Commons on Monday (09/01/17), Secretary of State for Health Jeremy Hunt sad that, under the current government, a total of 1,400 more patients were accessing mental health services every day, compared to figures for 2010.

Mr Hunt told the House of Commons that the government was committed to a shared society in which public services work to the highest standards for everyone – including plans announced by the Prime Minister on mental health.

He added that the government was investing more in mental health than ever before – with plans for one million more people with mental health conditions to access services by 2020.

However, The Health Secretary told MPs that the government recognised that there was more to be done, including formally accepting the recommendations of the Independent Taskforce on Mental Health, which will see mental health spending increase by £1 billion a year by the end of this Parliament.

The Green Paper on children’s and young people’s mental health will be published before the end of the year – and every secondary school will train a member of staff in mental health first aid.

Mr Hunt confirmed that there would be a new partnership with employers to support mental health in the workplace – and up to £15 million extra will be invested in places of safety for those in crisis, following the successful start to this programme in the last Parliament.

There will also be “an ambitious expansion” of digital mental health provision.

On Tuesday, NHS Digital has published its annual survey of A&E statistics – Hospital Accident and Emergency Activity, 2015-16 – and figures obtained by the BBC from the data show that show that more people with mental health conditions are attending A&E departments.

In October 2016, NHS Digital had published its report, Psychological Therapies: Annual Report on the use of IAPT services, 2015-16 – which found that official statistics show a strong link between deprivation and the likelihood of recovering from anxiety and depression.

The report examines activity, waiting times and outcomes for the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme run by the NHS in England – and found a strong relationship between deprivation levels and whether patients recovered from mental illness after talking therapies such as counselling, CBT and peer support.

More than 200,000 referrals were received from the most deprived 10% of areas, compared with less than 92,000 referrals from the least deprived areas.

While 55% of patients from the least-deprived areas recovered, only 35% of those in the most deprived areas did so, the report found.
