Duncan Lewis, Housing Solicitors, £75m social housing boost for Salford, after Salix Homes takes over ownership from council

The city of Salford in Greater Manchester has received a £75 million boost for social housing to be spent over the next five years, after residents living in Local Authority properties voted to transfer their council-owned homes to Salix Homes, unlocking the cash boost in the process.

Online publisher 24Dash.com reports that Salix Homes already manages properties for the local council and will now take over ownership of 8,500 social housing properties.

Salix has pledged to bring its housing stock up to the government’s Decent Homes standard by 2020. Under its five-year investment programme, the former Local Authority homes will be refurbished with new kitchens, bathrooms, windows and heating systems. The company says a total of 1,800 new kitchens, 2,000 new bathrooms, 4,000 new windows and 3,000 upgraded heating systems will be fitted.

Salix Homes says it will also continue to invest in communities – and will provide hundreds of new jobs and training opportunities.

Chairman of the board at Salix Homes, Peter Styche OBE, said:

“The successful ballot result is fantastic news for our tenants and for social housing in Salford – and means we can now look ahead to the future and start delivering the investment that the city’s social housing needs.

“While we have made improvements to many homes already, this investment will mean that we can now improve all homes – and, crucially, make sure every home is maintained at that standard for generations to come.

“At a time of huge austerity cuts in Salford and across the country, Salix Homes is in a strong position to provide the investment needed in people's homes – and to continue to deliver the excellent services we pride ourselves on.”

Salix will also protect social housing tenants’ current rights – including protecting rents so they do not rise above the same level as council rents.
