A youth homelessness charity in Yorkshire is setting up a scheme to help young homeless people find a place to live.
The Supported Lodgings Scheme was established by the charity SASH and is calling for volunteers to help roll out the new service in Ryedale, Yorkshire.
The scheme will help vulnerable young people aged 16 to 25 – and will offer longer term support for those who are homeless and in need of a safe place to live while developing essential skills needed to live independently.
SASH already runs an emergency accommodation project in Ryedale for young homeless people called Nightstop.
Community coordinator for SASH, Sarah Ware, told local publisher the Gazette & Herald:
“The best place for homeless young people is in ordinary homes, where they can get the help and support they need.
“We now urgently need Supported Lodgings hosts to offer a room and work with the SASH Support Workers to prepare young people to live independently.”
Nightstop hosts Josie Downs and Glyn Wild have so far helped 21 young homeless people. Mr Wild says they have become more aware of the issues surrounding homelessness among young people as a result.
“We were aware of homelessness issues already – but didn't realise how quickly it could happen and with young people it's more hidden,” said Mr Wild.
“Being hosts is just so rewarding – and without SASH we think some of those who've stayed with us might have had to sleep rough.”
Young people may end up homeless if they are forced to leave the family home because of family disputes or overcrowding in the family home – or as a result of physical or sexual abuse within the home.
