Duncan Lewis, Housing Solicitors, Waltham Forest Council completes first of 207 new council homes

Waltham Forest Council in east London has announced that the first new properties have been completed as part of a major council house building programme in Waltham Forest.

A total of 207 new council homes for social rent will be developed – the majority of which are being built on former garage sites owned by the council.

The official handover of the first two properties – located on a former garage site at St Leonards Avenue in Highams Park – took place on Wednesday, attended by representatives from the council and the contractor, Keepmoat.

All the homes delivered as part of the programme will be made available for social rent, under the ownership of Waltham Forest Council.

The properties will be a mixture of houses and flats – and will all be built to high sustainability standards.

The new council homes completed at St Leonards Avenue are two three-bedroom houses, fitted with solar panels and an efficient gas boiler to help keep energy costs down.

Waltham Forest Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, Councillor Khevyn Limbajee, said:

“I am absolutely delighted that the first properties have been completed as part of our major council home building programme.

“It is superb that these new homes are going to be let to families who have been living in overcrowded flats.

“We know that the availability of affordable housing is a major concern for our residents – and our council house building programme is making a difference to increase that supply.

“These news homes will be available for social rent, under the management of the council – today’s official handover of these first news homes shows the council’s innovative programme of building on disused garage sites is making a real difference.”

The development of the new council homes is being delivered under several separate contracts, with delivery being phased over the next few years.

The first contract delivered 11 new family council homes for completion by spring 2017.
