Private sector tenants “facing abuse from landlords and letting agents” (3 September 2015)

Research by housing charity Shelter has revealed that more tenants in the private sector are being subjected to abuse by landlords or letting agents.
Housing news publisher 24Dash.com reports that in the last year, the number of private sector tenants experiencing abuse was equivalent to the population of Lincoln – a total of 125,000.
Shelter surveyed a total of 3,792 private sector tenants, out of whom 60 claimed to have experienced abuse from a landlord or letting agent. The charity calculated the total number facing abuse using data from the English Housing Survey and Census data.
Shelter also revealed that its own helpline had received nearly 17,000 calls about abusive landlords.
Shelter is currently campaigning to strengthen protection for tenants, to halt “revenge” evictions by landlords after they receive complaints about their properties.
Shelter’s director of services, Alison Mohammed, said:
“It’s shocking that a small minority of rogue landlords who are exploiting the housing crisis can cause so much havoc and misery in the lives of renters.
“The only way to fix the problem long-term is to make renting fit for purpose for the millions of ordinary families searching for a safe and stable home.”
