A new housing scheme for vulnerable young people leaving care has been opened in Ashford in Kent.
Mayor of Ashford Winston Michael officially opened Belgic Court – a supported housing scheme at The Limes in Ashford.
Belgic Court supports vulnerable young people with their transition from care to independent living – and consists of eight self-contained, fully furnished one-bedroom flats and a communal facility.
The scheme has been developed by Golding Homes in partnership with Ashford Borough Council and Kent County Council and is now managed by Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL).
Belgic Court provides housing-related support to 16-25-year-olds who need help in developing the necessary life skills to live independently.
As part of this support, they are taught how to maintain a tenancy – and receive assistance with training and job opportunities, as well as being given help and advice with budgeting and confidence building.
The Mayor of Ashford said:
“Belgic Court brings invaluable support and inspiration to vulnerable young people to make that transition from care to independent living – by doing so, this will give them self esteem and self worth, while at the same time increasing their life chances.
“It is a shining example of what can be achieved through partnership and one vision, so thank you to Golding Homes, Kent County Council and Ashford Borough Council.”
Director of Development and Commercial Services at Golding Homes, Chris Blundell, added:
“Belgic Court demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration and partnership working – and I want to play tribute to the huge number of people who have contributed to the success of this worthwhile project.
“It has been an eventful journey and we are really delighted to see the completion of this important purpose built scheme to support young people leaving care.”
SSL Regional Service Manager, Leslie Morson, also said:
“It’s important that we give these young people the very best opportunities in life – and this can be achieved at Belgic Court by giving them personalised care and support that’s tailored to their individual needs.”
