More cuts to benefits may be on the way (11 August 2014)

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith is expected to announce further cuts in benefits in the run up to the general election next year – including lowering the current £26,000 annual cap on welfare benefits to the level of the average income of £18,000.

The Mail on Sunday also reports that Mr Duncan Smith is considering limiting child benefits claims to the first two children in any family.

In a speech today (11/08/14) the Work and Pensions Secretary is expected to point out that axing benefits entitlement and introducing stringent checks on disability benefits claimants have helped reduced the rate of unemployment in Britain from 7.8% a year ago to the current unemployment rate of 6.5%.

Capping welfare to a total of £500 per week has meant that some families have had to move home to a cheaper house – potentially removing their children from their schools and friends.

Families in receipt of more than £800 per week have mainly been affected by the government benefits cuts this year.

Limiting child benefits to just the first two children could mean larger families in which no adult is earning a wage may have to move to a cheaper area if parents fail to find employment.

Last week the Deputy Governor of the Bank of England Ben Broadbent said that Mr Duncan Smith’s welfare cuts had encouraged more people back into work, however.
