Bromley Council has prosecuted a landlord who failed to carry out necessary repair work to a house rented to a mother and her children.
Bromley Council issued an Improvement Notice detailing severe defects and deficiencies which needed addressing at the property in Main Road, St Paul’s Cray in Bromley.
Kanthasamy Sothilingam failed to carry out work, however, resulting in the council prosecuting him under the Housing Act 2004.
Conditions at the property were subsequently found to be so bad that the council had to re-house the family renting the home.
On Wednesday, 7 October at Bromley Magistrates’ Court, Kanthasamy Sothilingam pleaded guilty to failing to comply with Bromley Council's Improvement Notice.
He was fined £1,000 and ordered to pay £930.50 in costs, with an £100 victim surcharge and an £150 criminal courts charge.
After the hearing, Bromley Council’s Executive Member for Public Protection and Safety, Councillor Kate Lymer, said:
“We must make sure that rented properties do not present a hazard to anyone’s health or safety.
“Landlords must meet their statutory obligations and ensure their properties are let in a reasonable condition.
“The council will not allow them to get away with letting substandard properties – and if they fail to comply with Improvement Notices, legal action will be taken.”
