Housing associations must prepare for an ageing population, says think tank (2 February 2015)

Duncan Lewis, Housing Solicitors, Housing associations must prepare for an ageing population, says think tank

A new report by think tank the Smith Institute has said that the UK’s ageing population might cost housing associations an extra £1 million by 2034.

Social housing publisher 24Dash.com reports that the study Are Housing Associations ready for an Ageing Population? suggests that housing associations could have to provide housing for an extra 500,000 tenants over 65 in the next two decades.
.
The think tank surveyed housing associations and found 90% admitted they needed better preparation to meet the needs of an ageing population – and 80% feared a financial shortfall to meet the challenges of an elderly population within the next decade without a major overhaul of funding.

The think tank’s report also suggests that “generally weak” links between the social housing sector and the NHS should be strengthened, to ensure that health, social care and housing services are better integrated to provide care and support to older tenants at home.

The report also highlights that the social housing sector is particularly exposed to the impacts of an ageing population – with tenants more likely to face lower financial security, higher rates of disability and health conditions, as well as greater social isolation and a high rate of exclusion from the digital age.

The report is sponsored by the Genesis Housing Association.
