A survey conducted by the HomeOwners Alliance has revealed a drop in the proportion of renters who aspire to one day be homeowners.
The 2017 report, published together with BLP Insurance, shows that approximately 250,000 UK renters abandoned their hopes of one day owning their own home, which, according to the HomeOwners Alliance, points to a worsening housing crisis.
Among the renters involved in the survey, 71% said they wanted to own a home in the future, which is down from the 73% of the previous year. The report also found that 86% of renters say they could be deterred from owning due to house prices, with 85% seriously concerned about saving for a deposit, and 80% saying they are unable to find a home to buy.
Also highlighted in the report, is that UK houses have increased by 4.5%, which is out of line with average UK earnings increasing by only 2.6%.
Chief Executive of the HomeOwners Alliance Paula Higgins commented: “While we are used to stories about people not being able to buy a home until they are 40, the story has taken a turn for the worse with people increasingly giving up altogether on the dream of homeownership.”
