North West Leicestershire District Council (NMLDC) is building affordable housing after demolishing a former sheltered housing block at Coalville.
Work has already started on the council’s first council house building programme in a generation – the council said that, to guarantee the development was delivered efficiently, offered social value and was sourced at the best cost, construction company Robert Woodhead Ltd was taken on through procurement consortium, EEM Ltd, of which NWLDC is a member.
The site in Coalville is just one of three developments in the housebuilding programme, which will see 24 new houses and bungalows built on council-owned land.
The site at Coalville will include ten houses and one bungalow, providing homes for local families.
Portfolio Holder for Housing at NWLDC, Councillor Roger Bayliss, said:
“We are really pleased that clearance of the sites has now been completed and we are ready to start building in earnest.
“These new council houses will go some way towards meeting the housing needs of the 700 households on our waiting list.”
As part of Woodhead and EEM Ltd’s commitment to delivering social value on all its sites, the council said the team had been working with a number of full- time construction course students from a local college, to help give them hands on experience of a building site and the benefit of the site team’s experience.
Project Manager for Robert Woodhead Ltd, Andrew Cassels, said:
“We’re really pleased with the progress on the site so far – and have been delighted to share the varying stages with young people from Stephenson College.
“We pride ourselves on building excellent quality homes and ensuring we have an impact on the local community while doing so.
“We always try to provide opportunities to young people living close to a site, whether that be through an apprenticeship scheme or providing work placements.”
Chief Executive of EEM Ltd, Pete Smith, also said:
“We want our members – such as North West Leicestershire District Council to have access to fantastic frameworks, getting the best cost and social value for the programmes they are working on.
“I’m delighted to see the progress already made on the sites in Coalville and Ashby De La Zouch.
“I look forward to seeing the homes going up, and meeting with the people working on them.”
